Description
The 12,000-acre Caroni Swamp and Bird Sanctuary in 2015 which is the nesting home of the Scarlet Ibis bird, one of the national birds of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, was renamed in honour of renowned environmentalist Winston Nanan for his lifelong dedication to the development of this site. It is now known as the Winston Nanan Caroni Bird Sanctuary.
Every evening around sunset, hundreds and sometimes thousands of these bright red scarlet Ibis fly into the swamp to roost on the trees in the mangrove. It is said by the the tour guides, that the birds travel daily to the Venezuelan mainland which is approximately 11 miles from Trinidad, to feed and at dusk they return to the Winston Nanan Caroni Bird Sanctuary in Trinidad to roost.
There are over 180 bird species that can be found amongst the dense mangrove thickets of the bird sanctuary, such as, kingfishers, herons and the colorful masked cardinal. Since 2016 pink flamingos which are not native of Trinidad, have flown hundreds of miles to reach the feeding grounds in the swamp which has become home to a colony of Caribbean flamingos.
