Description
Belmont is located at the foot of the Laventille Hills, in north-east Port of Spain, Trinidad in the Caribbean.
When the British abolished the slave trade in 1807. Some of the freed African slaves were brought to Trinidad and were given free land in Belmont and the area became known as Freetown for a while.
In the late 19th century when West Indian immigrants, mainly from Barbados came to settle in the area, wooden gingerbread houses began to replace the rickety shacks of its original residents. It was at this time, that Belmont was considered as the city's first suburb.
Many of Belmont's beautiful old homes with their tin roofs, porticos, jalousies, verandahs, fretwork and lattice work have survived in remarkably good condition.
